OUR INTERDISCIPLINARY THEMATIC UNIT WORK IN-PROGRESS

Your initial steps (due by Thursday, 10/18):

Create a linked wiki page below that will serve as your unit work space (e.g., Josh's Thematic Unit Wiki or something like that...).

As your first step in that work space, post a list of at least 3 possible content focuses (e.g., YA novel, historical event, etc.) around which you could shape a unit of instruction (again, your CT is an important resource here) to be taught in the spring.

Along with this list, generate some possible themes that would fit well with the content you might be teaching — consider themes that will engage middle grades students, especially resistant students. Click on the link that follows for a look at some possible themes. Note that some of these are topics rather than themes. Next week's reading, "Themes" by Tchudi & Lafler and "Creating Instructional Units" by Tchudi & Mitchell (will be available on moodle), will help make the idea of a theme more explicit, as well as provide insights into how to frame a unit using a thematic approach.

Put an asterisk by both of the following: a) the one content focus you think you will teach or most want to teach, as well as b) the theme that you feel is most relevant to this content focus. If you already know your unit focus, tell us about it in a few sentences, along with your options for themes.

For further details about future steps see course prep sheets and unit project guidelines once they are provided. Continue to use your wiki here as a work space to the extent that you find it useful. You WILL need to post your unit project here in addition to providing a copy to Dr. Y, Crystal, and Clarice.

IMPORTANT: As discussed in class and indicated on course prep sheets, your final Interdisciplinary Thematic Unit Project will be due in HARD COPY form to turn in at the Exam Session on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, or Friday, Dec. 7, by 4:30 pm in 402 Poe Hall. In addition, your unit project should also be posted on the wiki with the exception of your reflection and rubric.
